Maybe we can get our EEOC friend on this issue.

Apparently sports are not immune to racism. I have two things to say on this. 1) Please pay me millions and discriminate against me - I am willing to foul out. 2) I am impressed that NBA officials can show ANY consistency, albeit racially biased. NBA officials are the worst.

Seriously, this study has real world implications.

There will always be racism in the world no matter what. I am not saying there is in the NBA, but people will always tend to gravitate to people similar to them whether they like band or football, or they are black or white, purble or blue.

wow this is pretty ridiculous. i mean of course prejudices exist in this world...duh. and why should sports be excluded? but to take the effort to gather all the stats for this seems like a waste of time. i'm hoping players don't make a big deal out of this

Seems logical..too bad the EEOC lady already left...maybe we could inform her, right?

ps. I'm glad this is finally working so I can get a good participation grade for crying out loud.

I dont think that there is a racial bias in the NBA but if they can show the evidence of it i suppose it's true. Although I dont really know whether or not it really has anything to do with the races of the players. If 83 percent of the players are black wouldnt it make since that more foul calls are made against blacks?

Although all the statistics say one thing, what are the chances that every single white ref is racist towards black players and every single black ref is racist towards white players? Although there might be some racist refs, the chances of all of them being racist are pretty slim. I agree with Brandon, if more players are black then there should be more fouls called on black players. Common sense.

well there are alot more black players than white players in the NBA.

I think each individual ref is different in their own way and you cant just do a statistic.

People are rediculous... and so are the statistics. Sure, some people are going to be racist but not enough to really make a difference.

i think our country is consumed with political correctness and trying to make everything as totally fair as possible all the time. what differencedoes it make, a foul's a foul regardless of your skin color. sarah hobson

i think that the combination of there being more than three times as many blacks in the NBA & also the fact that whites are inferior basketball players, shows the reason why we see a larger amount of fouls called on blacks.jk i actually have no idea, but the difference in foul calls is probably so small that this study can be seen as a waste of time.

There is nothing anybody can do about racism. It will always exist. The only thing you can do is to treat each other the way you would like to be treated.

I read about this in Sports Illustrated. There are three things wrong with it:
1. They used data from 1994
2. Another study conducted by the NBA with current data produced no such bias
3.The players themselves (even the African-American ones) thought, in LeBron James words, "it's stupid".

Plus black players play more minutes than white guys. The study was conducted from box scores so there's no telling if the fouls were obvious. You can't fault a ref for calling 6 obvious fouls on Shaq and only one on itty-bitty Steve Kerr. Black guys are bigger, so they play more physical positions, so they commit more fouls than a point-guard (who are more likely to be white than a center).

There's hardly any fouls called on Asian players, and none called on players, and none called on players with only one leg. Just because those guys only have one leg doesn't mean they can't foul.

Bottom line - it's dumb. You have to look at the big picture, not just box scores.

these guys obviously said to each other "lets get a bunch of interviews, graphs, and numbers and cram them all into a 'statistic-based' paper and after we come to a 'logical' conclusion, we can point our fingers to the white refs that take part in our american pasttime.

the refs all have different opinions on what they see or hear whether its on the court or on the field. it doesn't justify that they are racist.

man, i wish i would've brought this topic up to the EEOC lady. maybe then i would've gotten a keychain or a sucker.

Racism is wrong and shouldn't go on but what are you going to do? It's going to happen.

This theory that officials call more fouls on black people than white is true because 85% of the people in the NBA are black; it only makes sense!

Anonymous said...

Only 15% of NBA is white so it makes complete sense and is not racism.

Racism will exist no matter what you do, it will always be in the world. But i don't think it can make that much of a difference in basketball!!

Blah, another racist claim. I'd rather not wait for the day when everyone suddenly becomes not-racist. It's just not going to happen. People have their own prejudices and there's nothing we can really do about it except grin and bear it.

The Spurs are gonna win it all. Yeah, there certainly was alot of racism against Tim Duncan last night. What do these guys have to say about that?

Wow. Calculating that is just asking for racism. Where are all the people counting the number of fouls against jewish people. and do hispanics even play basket ball? what's the count on the number of calls against the "knappy headed hoes?" for womens basket ball? oh well. all of this trying to prove that we're not racist is just making us racist.
